Scales

I explore La Sirène's symbolic relationship to the paradox of hypervisibility and invisibility—both in social contexts and within practices of mediumship from an African perspective. Scales is a musical score for a performance that doesn’t yet exist, represented as a wax painting camouflaged against a white background. Here, the mermaid becomes both a sculptural object and a prop, referencing the abacus as a calculating tool to reveal the infinite nuances found in liminal spaces. Your complete identity is never fully recognized, creating a sense of isolation. The dominant culture only partially accounts for the observed despite blending in.
