The Final Girl or How To Gut A Fish…

The word "Butterfly" translates to "Psyche" in Greek. In my deconstructed version of the greek mythology of Psyche and Eros, the ego and the unconscious take center stage. Aspects of black popular culture are re-imagined as matrixes or illusions of time travel across cultural and historical periods. The butterfly, embodied by the plainly clothed performer, symbolizes transformation and the desire for freedom. Eros, the performed in the costume, embodies a spectral figure conveying the unseen Ancestor, veiled as song, wind, and breath that resides in the unconscious while guiding the self from beyond. My father's voice also embodies Eros, an arrowhead that expresses his paternal wisdom and devotion. The ghillie suit is a masquerade costume that appropriates the act of camouflaging from both a western and eastern point of reference . West African masquerades revolve around the possession of a deity, ancestral figure, or natural force, the costume suit in the performance is dyed black to cast the wearer into the role of a shadow. The keys attached to the ghillie suit amplify the idea of this character being a mediator between the material and spiritual world.
